WE ARE THE WORST

WE ARE THE WORST
WIR SIND DIE SCHLIMMSTEN
Germany, 2015 | 7'05''
16 mm and smartphone camera transferred to HD video | Mono

Frankfurt am Main, April 2013. After more than forty years the AfE-Tower – symbol for Frankfurt's critical academic culture and home to the social sciences – is evicted. For many its demolition by blasting on February 2nd, 2014 marks the end of an era of student initiative.

Amidst this bitter spectacle, a student couple delves into an issue of the nationalist World War II pulp magazine DER LANDSER.

THE INVISIBLE CLOAK

THE INVISIBLE CLOAK
Germany, 2015 | 5'00''
Super 8 transferred to HD video | Mono

Four words emerge from cosmic noise. They arrange and re-arrange, changing their meaning in an ever transforming context before they finally dissolve.

Meanwhile, grainy Super 8 footage depicting the microcosm of a house spider gets slowly assimilated by a digital, yet strangely organic image.

COMBAT

COMBAT
Germany/Morocco, 2014 | 7'10''
Super 8 transferred to HD video | Mono

The T.V. set spews out violent images of an MMA tournament. Fish battle for breadcrumbs in front of resting naval vessels. An afternoon football game turns into a chaotic free-for-all.

Stylistically emulating home/vacation movies, this Super 8 footage shot in Casablanca, Morocco instead shows an eerie world defined by confrontation and conflict.

GLUE

GLUE
Germany, 2013 | 6'50''
16 mm transferred to HD video | Stereo

Underneath the wings of an MQ-9 Reaper drone, a nameless man is absorbed in his activities, driven by motivations that seem equally fetishistic and scientific.

"...a colorful and almost tactile experience built upon an incredibly magnetic mise-en-scène, but under whose surface lurks something decidedly disturbing. This carefully crafted picture is rounded out by a no less ingenious soundtrack that intensifies its dreamlike nature and, more to the point, its subliminal nastiness."

- 49th Karlovy Vary International Film Festival

GLUE was screened at the 49th Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, 14th goEast Festival Wiesbaden, and 2014 Alternative Film/Video Belgrade.

EQUINOX

EQUINOX
2012 | Spruce wood, UV printed acrylic glass, light tubes
Ca. 143 cm x 97 cm x 20 cm

EQUINOX is a sequence of 380 hand painted 35 mm slides, with different kinds of ink applied directly onto the film emulsion.

A selection of six was scanned in high resolution and made into a series of lightboxes. Built in collaboration with Benjamin Richter.

SLICE OF DEATH

SLICE OF DEATH
Germany/France, 2010-2012 | 10'05''
Super 8, 16 mm and 35 mm slides transferred to HD video | Mono

To escape the limbo she is trapped in after her death, a young woman has to cut the ties to her former life.

Taking cues from The Tibetan Book of The Dead and combining black and white Super 8, 16 mm color reversal stock and over 1,000 hand-painted 35 mm slides, SLICE OF DEATH utilizes different film formats as representations of different levels of consciousness.

MISFITS

MISFITS
Germany, 2011 | 1'30'' (looped)
35 mm slides transferred to HD video | Stereo

A video piece based on (and using pictures from) the book LEAST WANTED: A CENTURY OF AMERICAN MUGSHOTS by Mark Michaelson and Steven Kasher.

The pictures of seven suspects are burned in a transformative cleansing ritual. Even though supposed to be "innocent until proven guilty", the moment these individuals' photographs are taken, the meaning behind this phrase is already being hollowed out.

As the film stock sizzles and melts, a new, primal texture takes over in a futile attempt at erasing these faces from history.

THANATOS

THANATOS
Germany, 2010 | 3'01''
16 mm transferred to HD video | Mono

This experimental short fiction examines Sigmund Freud's speculative death drive by depicting a young woman's self-destructive behaviour.

Employing a surrealist dialectic of Freudian symbolism and methods of direct film, THANATOS follows an injected substance through the skin and blood stream, all the way into the neural network of the protagonist's brain.
